Technology trends in energy and utilities management

Understand how the digital transformation is revolutionizing the market and what are the major technology trends in energy and utilities management.

The Viridis platform is extensively based on the concepts of the Internet of Things, Big Data, and Industry 4.0, as it is capable of capturing, storing and processing large volumes of data on the consumption of energy and utilities of any operational unit, whether a specific machine or a production process as a whole. These data, combined with information about the context in which they were recorded (production plans, process variables, operational parameters, among others), makes possible, using the techniques of Machine Learning, the construction of predictive models that are combined to create a digital representation of that asset – a digital twin. The large integration capacity of the platform facilitates the capture of relevant data, while its modeling and visualization capabilities make the use, interpretation, and evolution of digital twins easy, resulting in significant value creation for our clients. Click here to learn more about our solutions.

5 Reasons to use a cloud-based energy and utilities management system

See five relevant reasons to use a cloud-based energy and utilities management system.

Viridis offers a cloud-based commissioning model using Cloud Computing environments, with the option of public or private cloud environments. There is also the option of using the environment contracted by the client from their current cloud providers. In both cases, data communication with the sites is performed by the Viridis IoT Gateway, a technology developed by Viridis exclusively to provide bi-directional integration in real time with multiple local systems, in addition to performing edge analytics. Commissioning in the cloud offers federated authentication, public or private cloud, and encryption, among other features to provide the highest level of trust and security. Click here to learn more about our solutions.

5 Gaps in Energy Management that may be interfering with your results

Submitted by Aline Gonçalves on Fri, 06/08/2018 - 18:24
The Energy Management System aims to establish and perpetuate the culture of consciousness and care in relation to energy use through energy efficiency initiatives. However, without the proper care on the part of organizations, such measures, in addition to being isolated, become temporary significantly undermining management results in the long term.

The Viridis platform provides features to directly support the entire energy and utilities management cycle, including monitoring, planning, procurement, costing, measurement and verification, simulation, and optimization of energy consumption. The monitoring functions permit the identification of opportunities for process improvement, stratifying energy consumption in terms of different dimensions, in addition to allowing the quantification of gains in terms of costs and greenhouse gas emissions. The integration of monitoring data with the planning functions provides greater sophistication, consistency, and accuracy in the forecast of future levels of energy consumption and, consequently, about cost planning and its contrast with the value realized. Business Process Management (BPM) functions allow the configuration of procedures specifically aligned with the reality of each operation, facilitating the organization of the entire Energy and Utilities Management System. Finally, the Viridis platform facilitates the integrated management of continuous improvement projects focusing on energy efficiency, promoting strategic alignment from the conception, implementation, and validation of investments performed by the organization using specific measurement and verification functions. Learn more about our products.

10 capabilities that should not be missing in an effective energy and utilities management system

Submitted by Mariane Gonçalves on Thu, 04/19/2018 - 22:27
Today the big concern of companies in various segments is the balance between streamlining the consumption of energy resources and of other inputs without decreasing productivity and the quality of products and services offered.

The Viridis platform for energy and utilities management provides capabilities to directly support energy efficiency initiatives of industrial organizations, covering functions including monitoring, planning, contracting, costing, simulation, and optimization of energy consumption. The monitoring functions permit the identification of opportunities for process improvement, stratifying energy consumption in terms of different dimensions, in addition to allowing the quantification of gains in terms of costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

The integration of monitoring data with planning functions strengthens the efforts of the transformation initiatives, since it confers greater sophistication, consistency, and accuracy in the prediction of future consumption and, consequently, in planning of costs and the comparison with the actual values. Finally, the Viridis platform enables integrated management of projects of continuous improvement with a focus on energy efficiency, seeking strategic alignment from the conception, implementation, and evaluation of the investments carried out by the organization. Learn more about our products.

Complex Event Processing in Energy and Utilities Management Systems

Submitted by Ricardo Giacomin on Thu, 03/30/2017 - 21:11
An energy & utilities management system covers many disciplines such as instrumentation and measurements, energy performance indicators (EnPI), equipment consumption models (ideally inferred using machine learning methods), cost accounting, budget construction and execution, among others. It is possible, for instance, to systematically generate events that signal the loss of communication with a sensor or meter, that log the moment that a given piece of equipment stops producing and becomes idle, that identify low energy performance of an asset in comparison with its historical behavior, among other things.

The Viridis platform employs a CEP - complex event processing - framework to analyze and process events generated by various sources. Energy meters, commercial contracts, or even production forecast scenarios generate events that are processed through expressive, human-friendly rules. Different actions may be triggered including notifying personnel in real time on their mobile devices, or even interfacing directly with control systems for automated corrective action.

Energy and Utilities Cost Accounting - Part 2

Submitted by Thiago Turchetti Maia on Thu, 03/23/2017 - 16:43
Good rules are the foundation for good cost accounting. Costing rules determine how the continuous consumption of energy and utilities, ideally measured by a network of meters, will translate into accounting transactions in cost centers. As with most things in management, good rules contribute to accountability, accuracy, and transparency, whereas bad rules do just the opposite. Good rules will try to employ direct costing as much as possible, creating a direct association between the consumption measured by meters in specific parts of the operation to the values registered in their corresponding cost centers.

The Viridis platform manages the whole cost accounting discipline, from meters to uploaded transactions in ERP systems. It supports direct and indirect costing rules from multiple sources, and provides managers with cost tracking resources to further enhance transparency and accountability.

Energy and Utilities Cost Accounting - Part 1

Most cost-sensitive operations dedicate leadership time and effort to properly manage their costs. When done right, managers feel the pressure to cut costs right down to their own individual bottom line, and strive to improve the economic performance of the operations they are responsible for. When done wrong, that is, when costs are not properly assigned nor results diligently commanded, costs become a lesser priority to the organization with the inevitable ensuing consequences.

The Viridis platform handles all data management necessary for proper cost accounting, automating the whole workflow from meters and costing rules to indicators and accounting transactions. The Viridis costing module integrates directly with ERP systems, improving process accuracy, timeliness, transparency, and agility.

Data vs Facts

Submitted by Ricardo Giacomin on Wed, 03/08/2017 - 18:32
When discussing energy management practices in different companies, we often hear “proud” managers arguing that they are doing very well because they have thousands of tags being registered in a historian system, they already receive a daily consumption report for each production line, they account for all costs on the first day of the following month, or even that they have the history of the last 3 years of invoices for the thousands of sites in their operation. It doesn’t take long – usually around 5 questions – for them to understand that all they have is data, and that data alone does not reveal the relevant facts that would lead to effective actions.

Viridis builds energy & utilities management solutions based on big data. To us, however, large amounts of data are not enough. Our products employ contextualization algorithms, pattern recognition algorithms, automated model inference, and relevant fact identification from a large data lake fed from sources all over the operation. One of our differentiators is to help answer the “whys” of energy consumption and effectively promote actions to improve efficiency.
