One of the largest gold producers in the world, AngloGold Ashanti has mines and metallurgical and beneficiation plants distributed in the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais and Goiás. Their business encompasses 13 operations in nine countries, generating more than 60,000 jobs. AngloGold Ashanti is headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, and its shares are traded on exchanges in Johannesburg, New York, Australia, and Ghana. With more than 4,000 employees, Brazilian operations account for 15% of global gold production of the group and are among the most advanced in the world in the field of mining technology due to the excellence of equipment and processes used and due to the development of engineering solutions for underground mining activity.
Moved by the age of Industry 4.0, where everyone and everything is connected, AngloGold Ashanti looked for an energy and utilities management solution focused on energy cost management and control. Until then the energy and utilities management system used by AngloGold Ashanti was not automated, that is, it required manual input from the operational and energy areas for the generation of performance indicators. “Since we started using the Viridis solution, online indicator monitoring has become possible, and this allows us to make decisions and evaluate equipment and process performance automatically,” says Mário Alvarenga, AngloGold Ashanti energy manager.
With the Viridis system, the company's expectation is to optimize energy management, thereby bringing information online to aid in decision-making. The effective management of raw materials and energy inputs is part of the policy of the AngloGold Management System. Electricity, for example, represents the 3rd largest cost of the company and one of the largest inputs of the production process. In addition, it is also expected that there will be a reduction in the volume and cost of energy inputs due to improvements in process efficiency. The system is one of the gateways of AngloGold to the age of the 4th Industrial Revolution, also known as Industry 4.0.
Mário Alvarenga also highlights the work of the Viridis team in this step: “The support Viridis is providing is very important in this phase of implementation. We are currently in the startup phase of the system and expect to reap good results from the new Viridis tool in the effective management of indicators, as it is possible to identify deviances and act promptly to correct them.”
