Energy Management was the main focus of ViridisCon 2016, promoted by Viridis in Belo Horizonte on March 17th and 18th. The event gathered professionals from some of the largest Brazilian companies, including Vallourec Brazil, Aperam South America, ThyssenKrupp CSA, Gerdau, AngloGold Ashanti, Villares Metals, Outotec, Vallourec Sumitomo, Between Brazil, and others, which participated in a diverse and intense schedule with courses, case presentations, group dynamics and informal networking opportunities.
The Change Management for Energy Efficiency Programs course was one of the highlights of ViridisCon. Given by the Human Change Management Institute’s CEO, Vicente Gonçalves, the two-day course discussed the main challenges that energy management teams face when implementing changes in practices, technology, and processes. By applying theoretical expositions, group dynamics, simulations, and case discussions, the participants learned about the main tools and skills essential for managing the human factors in project leadership, and understanding change management’s strategical nature.
The cases presentations and lectures were another high point of ViridisCon. Camila Lana, Vallourec’s energy management coordinator, brought up the theme “Energy Planning: How to respond quickly and precisely?” and discussed the most important practices and challenges of the steel mill’s energy planning. Luciano Miranda, part of Aperam South America’s operational excellence team, talked about one of the main current trends in technology, “Energy management and Industry 4.0”, and presented the case of Aperam’s energy management integrated system implementation at their site in Timóteo, Minas Gerais. Sérgio Grassi, member of CE-116, which elaborated ABNT NBR ISO 50,001 – Energy Management Systems, went deep on the theme “Excellence in Energy Management” and talked about the specifics and advantages of getting certification in the standard.
“I believe the event’s theme choice, Change Management, was extremely assertive given the moment our company is in now, implementing an energy efficiency system. The course detailed very well the importance of managing and planning change to achieve success in projects”, said Rachel Figueiredo de Souza, Continuous Improvement & Quality Manager at Aperam.
Pedro Celso, Energy Manager at Villares Metals, emphasized the advantages of the diverse content and schedule promoted at ViridisCon. “Change management is highly relevant and comprehensive in project management. The panelist Vicente Gonçalves presented an excellent parallel between change management, project management, and human behavior as a determining factor in a project’s success. The case presentations and the great interaction between the participants were also essential to the event’s efficacy”.
ViridisCon also created an integration moment for the participants, with a casual networking event followed by dinner. At the event’s closure, Viridis’s CEO, Thiago Tuchetti, confirmed the event’s next edition in 2017. “We were very pleased with the participants’ engagement and interest in this edition. We want ViridisCon to become a space of gathering, exchanges, benchmarking, and trends discussion for the Brazilian energy management community”.
